What Ghana Taught Us About Skin, Beauty, and Culture

While in Accra, we're reflecting on what Ghana has taught us about skin health, heritage, and the values that shape Karité.

These lessons are at the heart of everything we create, and we carry them with us in every product:

1. The Power of Raw, Unrefined Shea Butter

Growing up visiting Ghana, we saw firsthand how shea butter was used as a natural healer for dry skin, baby care, even wounds. It was unrefined, pure, and deeply nourishing. That same raw shea is still handcrafted by the women we work with today.

What we learned: Raw, unrefined shea butter is far more potent and effective than the overly processed versions found in most commercial products.

2. Beauty Is Rooted in Ritual and Care

In Ghana, skincare is about more than just looking good- its about caring for yourself and your family. It’s a ritual, passed down through generations of women. We watched our aunties and grandmothers gently rub shea butter into our skin, teaching us that beauty starts with care.

What we learned: Skincare is cultural and communal — not just cosmetic.

3. Simplicity and Purity Work

We grew up with skincare that relied on a few powerful, natural ingredients- not 30+ item labels. That approach continues to inspire Karité’s clean, minimal formulas: rich in raw shea butter, free of synthetics, and safe for the most sensitive skin.

What we learned: Less is more, especially when the ingredients are this good.
